State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak expected that mobile internet could be restored by next Monday (July 29). He said this following a meeting with internet service providers at the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) in the capital on Wednesday. He said household users will have their broadband internet connections restored by tonight (July 24). He also said that the limited broadband service will not include social media usage. Mobile internet, which has nearly 12.7 crore connections in the country, was shut down on Thursday (July 18) midnight last week. Around 9:00pm on the same day, broadband service was also disconnected, leaving the country detached from the cyber world.

আগামী সোমবারের (২৯ জুলাই) মধ্যে মোবাইল ইন্টারনেট চালু করা সম্ভব হবে বলে আশা করছেন ডাক, টেলিযোগাযোগ ও তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি প্রতিমন্ত্রী জুনাইদ আহমেদ পলক। বুধবার (২৪ জুলাই) বাংলাদেশ টেলিযোগাযোগ নিয়ন্ত্রণ কমিশনে (বিটিআরসি) ইন্টারনেট সেবা দানকারী প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর সঙ্গে বৈঠক শেষে তিনি এ কথা বলেন। প্রতিমন্ত্রী বলেন, আজ রাতের (২৪ জুলাই) মধ্যে বাসা-বাড়িতে ব্রডব্যান্ড ইন্টারনেট সংযোগ চালু করা হবে। তবে সীমিত পরিসরে চালু করা ব্রডব্যান্ড সেবায় সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যম ব্যবহার করা যাবে না বলে জানান তিনি। পলক বলেন, আমরা দৈনিক ৭০-৮০ কোটি টাকার ক্ষতির মুখোমুখি হয়েছি। এছাড়া ফেসবুক ও ইউটিউব কোনোভাবেই বাংলাদেশের আইন মানছে না। এমনকি তারা তাদের নিজেদের পলিসিও মানছে না। প্রসঙ্গত, কোটাবিরোধী আন্দোলনকে ঘিরে গত সপ্তাহের বৃহস্পতিবার (১৮ জুলাই) মধ্যরাতে দেশের প্রায় ১২ কোটি মোবাইল ইন্টারনেট সংযোগ বন্ধ করে দেয়া হয়। একই দিনে রাত ৯টার দিকে ব্রডব্যান্ড সেবাও বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে গেলে সাইবার জগৎ থেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে পড়ে পুরো দেশ।
