Most political parties demand December elections: LDP Secretary General
Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Secretary General Dr. Redwan Ahmed has dismissed Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s claim that only one political party wants national elections by December. In a statement issued on Friday, Dr. Ahmed asserted that nearly all political parties including at least 20 registered ones are demanding that elections be held within the year.
“All parties involved in the simultaneous movement led by the BNP, including the LDP, are united in their demand for elections by December,” he said. “There can be no delay or excuses. The national election must take place within this timeframe.”
Dr. Ahmed criticized the interim government, stating that its primary duty was to restore stability and promptly transfer power to elected representatives. “The people, especially the youth, aspired to a Bangladesh free from discrimination. But instead of fulfilling that mandate, the government is busy entrenching its grip on power.”
He also questioned the government’s reform agenda over the past nine months. “Waiving Tk 666 crore in interest for Grameen Bank, and Tk 4,000 crore for Grameenphone — both of which are stakeholders in Starlink — cannot be considered reforms,” Dr. Ahmed argued.
Highlighting the BNP’s political roadmap, he pointed to the 31-point state reform proposal introduced by BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. “This proposal outlines a comprehensive plan to rebuild the country’s damaged state structure,” he said. “It reflects the collective aspirations of all pro-democracy forces who opposed authoritarian rule. If implemented, no further reforms would be necessary.”
