Myanmar and Bangkok declare state of emergency after earthquake

In a separate report, the BBC reported that a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar around noon on Friday. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicentre was 16km (7 miles) north of the northwestern city of Sagaing.
The area is about 100km (62 miles) north of the capital, Naypyidaw. An AFP correspondent in Naypyidaw said the quake damaged roads and caused roofs to fall off buildings.
The quake was so powerful that tremors were felt hundreds of miles away in China and Thailand. The Thai government declared a state of emergency in Bangkok after an emergency meeting following the earthquake.
