Myanmar and Bangkok declare state of emergency after earthquake

Damage to buildings across Bangkok was reported after the 7.7-magnitude quake, including the collapse of a 30-storey under-construction skyscraper in the north of the city.

In a separate report, the BBC reported that a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar around noon on Friday. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicentre was 16km (7 miles) north of the northwestern city of Sagaing.

The area is about 100km (62 miles) north of the capital, Naypyidaw. An AFP correspondent in Naypyidaw said the quake damaged roads and caused roofs to fall off buildings.
