'National Charter' may be announced in July based on consensus: Badiul Alam Majumdar
A national charter is likely to be announced in July based on consensus, said Badiul Alam Majumdar, member of the National Consensus Commission and general secretary of Citizens for Good Governance (SHUJAN).
Badiul Alam Majumdar said: "In the next few days, the exchange of views with political parties will start again. I hope that we will be able to reach a consensus in the second discussion. On that basis, there will be a national charter. Everyone will sign this charter. We hope that it can be done in July. This is my desire, not a decision."
He said this in response to questions from journalists after the citizens' dialogue titled National Charter and Citizens' Expectations on Saturday (May 31) afternoon.
SHUJAN's Rangpur Metropolitan Committee organized this dialogue at the Rangpur RDRS auditorium with the slogan 'Aware, organized and vocal people are the protectors of democracy'. The Metropolitan Committee President Khandaker Khairul Anam presided over the dialogue.
SHUJAN general secretary said: "My personal wish is that the charter should be released on the day Abu Sayeed sacrificed his life. By doing so, we will be able to repay the blood debt of Abu Sayeed, the martyrs for whom we get the opportunity. As a nation, we will be able to become debt-free."
When asked whether the July Proclamation and the July Charter are the same, Badiul Alam Majumdar said: "The July Proclamation is a historical declaration. It will present the July movement in a historical context. The National Charter will be a set of reform proposals. The political parties will agree and sign it. They will determine how it will be implemented. In my opinion, they are two different things."
He said: "The reforms that political parties need, the preparations that candidates need for the election can start now. The government will not have to change the constitution for those reforms, and the consensus of political parties will not be required for those reforms. If they are implemented quickly, the path to holding elections will be smooth. He hopes that everyone will do their part."
