New banner hung at BSMMU, renamed to 'Bangladesh Medical University'
The previous nameplates of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) have been removed, and new banners with a different name have been put up. The university has been renamed Bangladesh Medical University (BMU).
Banners with the new name were seen in various blocks of the university campus on Saturday morning.
According to sources, doctors, officials, and employees of BSMMU, along with students from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, installed these new name banners. However, the university administration has not provided any official information regarding the matter.
Regarding the name change, Dr Md Ruhul Kuddus Biplob, the private secretary to the vice-chancellor, said: "I saw the new name banners for the first time on Saturday morning. The name they have chosen is one of several names under consideration by the university authorities. Discussions with the ministry regarding the name change are ongoing, and an official decision is expected within the next 2-3 working days."
Professor Dr AK Azad, pro-vice-chancellor (administration), said: "No final decision has been made regarding the name change. Several names are being considered. A new official announcement will be issued after consultations with students and approval from the authorities."
Earlier, on Wednesday night, protesters removed signboards bearing Bangabandhu's name from various locations within the university. The first signboard was removed from C Block, followed by additional nameplates in other parts of the university.
