The National Identity Card (NID) service across the country has been restored after being unavailable for about eight and a half hours. The disruption occurred from 9:00am to 5:30pm on Tuesday (13 May) due to a problem with the One-Time Password (OTP) system used in the NID service. A S M Humayun Kabir, Director General of the National Identity Registration Division, confirmed the matter.

He said, "The disruption happened due to a technical issue in the OTP service provider used in the NID system. However, the problem has been resolved, and the old OTPs are now being cleared gradually. Once everything is back to normal, citizens will be able to access NID services smoothly from Wednesday morning."

Election Commission officials said that while logging into the server, a user needs to enter a User ID, password, and then an OTP. But since Tuesday morning, OTPs were not being sent, so officials couldn’t log in to the server, causing a shutdown in online services. However, photo capturing and biometric data collection continued.

Humayun Kabir further said, "The server was not down. The issue occurred due to a fault in the OTP service provider. Now that the problem is fixed, services are returning to normal, and citizens will be able to access all NID services as usual from Wednesday."
