BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has claimed that only one individual—not an entire party—is opposing the proposal to hold the upcoming national election by December.

Speaking to the press on Friday after paying respects at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on the 44th anniversary of his death, Abbas responded to recent remarks made by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus during a visit to Japan.

“It is unfortunate that Dr Yunus criticised the BNP while abroad,” Abbas said. “He alleged that only one political party wants elections in December. In reality, it is not a party but a single person—Dr Yunus himself—who is reluctant to hold the polls on time.”

During an event in Tokyo, Yunus reaffirmed the interim government's timeline of holding elections between December and June. He stated that only one party had demanded a December election.

Abbas countered, saying, “It was Dr Yunus who first proposed the December timeline. Now he’s backtracking. If elections are delayed until June, they may not take place at all. That’s why December is critical.”

He added that the BNP, along with the people, is committed to ensuring the election takes place by year’s end.

Abbas also criticised the government’s engagement of foreign consultants in the name of reform. “President Ziaur Rahman implemented numerous reforms without the help of foreign advisors. Now, foreign involvement seems to be an excuse to avoid elections.”

He concluded by saying that prayers were offered at Zia’s grave on behalf of party chief Khaleda Zia and acting chairman Tarique Rahman, and urged the public to pray for the late leader.
