European Union Ambassador Michael Miller has emphasized that the registration or exclusion of political parties is an internal matter for Bangladesh, not for external entities like the EU to determine.

Speaking to reporters following a meeting at the Grand Riverview Hotel in Rajshahi on Thursday, the ambassador addressed ongoing cases regarding political party registration in the country.

“Deciding which party will be registered or not is entirely Bangladesh’s jurisdiction,” said Ambassador Miller.

In response to a question about the opposition BNP’s demand for elections in December, he clarified that the EU has no role in setting an election date.

“Determining the timing of elections is solely a decision for Bangladesh. It is not the EU’s role to offer opinions or exert pressure in this regard,” he stated.

The ambassador reaffirmed the EU’s support for Bangladesh’s political development. “We support Bangladesh’s transformation process and wish for its success,” he said.

He also mentioned that the EU is closely monitoring the country’s ongoing political developments, including the activities of the National Consensus Commission. Stressing the importance of fundamental rights, the rule of law, and fair process, he noted that the EU is ready to assist Bangladesh with expert support in implementing governance reforms.

In addition to political matters, Ambassador Miller highlighted Rajshahi’s economic potential, particularly its renowned mangoes. “Rajshahi mangoes have great potential in the European market. Beyond mangoes, many other local products also have strong export prospects,” he said.

The ambassador confirmed that a productive meeting had been held with the Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce, aimed at strengthening trade relations between the region and the EU.

He also praised the city’s infrastructure and environment. “Rajshahi is a clean and well-planned city. I’m deeply impressed by the hospitality and warmth of its people,” he added.
