Uma Dasgupta, who portrayed Durga in Satyajit Ray's 'Pather Panchali', has passed away. Uma's relative, actor and politician, Chiranjeet Chakrabarty confirmed the news. He said, "Uma di's daughter informed me that she is no more. She was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago." She breathed her last around 8am on Monday as she was battling cancer for several years. In Pather Panchali, Uma's character Durga dies due to high fever, after she enjoys the rains during the first shower of the year. The film , which is an adaptation of Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's 1929 Bengali novel of the same name, was Ray's debut feature as a director. It received widespread acclaim upon release and is frequently cited as one of the greatest films ever made.

‘পথের পাঁচালী’র দুর্গাখ্যাত অভিনেত্রী উমা দাশগুপ্ত মারা গেছেন। সোমবার (১৮ নভেম্বর) কলকাতার একটি বেসরকারি হাসপাতালে শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেছেন তিনি। অভিনেত্রীর মৃত্যুর খবরটি নিশ্চিত করেছেন অভিনেতা চিরঞ্জিৎ চক্রবর্তী। ভারতীয় সংবাদমাধ্যম জানিয়েছে, বেশ কয়েকদিন ধরেই অসুস্থ ছিলেন উমা দাশগুপ্ত। হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন ছিলেন তিনি। অভিনেতা চিরঞ্জিত বলেন, সকালে উমার মেয়ের সঙ্গে দেখা হয়েছিল। তখনই জানালেন, উমাদি চলে গেছেন। কয়েক বছর আগে ক্যানসার হয়েছিল তার। দীর্ঘদিন লাইট-ক্যামেরা-অ্যাকশন থেকে দূরে থাকলেও, সাদা-কালো সিনেমার দুনিয়ায় অপু-দুর্গার সেই অনবদ্য চরিত্র দর্শকের হৃদয়ের ক্যানভাসে গাঁথা রয়েছে। অভিনেত্রীর মৃত্যুতে টলিউডে নেমে এসেছে শোকের ছায়া।
