Police official hacked to death in Netrakona

Police official Md. Shafiqul Islam, 48, has been hacked to death in Netrakona's Durgapur.

The deceased, Shafiqul, is the son of Rafiqul Islam of Nayagaon village in Chandigarh union in Durgapur. He was working as a Sub-Inspector (SI) in the radio department of Jamalpur Police Lines.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) of the district special branch Md. Lutfar Rahman confirmed the incident.

According to eyewitnesses and family sources, Shafiqul Islam came home on Wednesday on leave. A gang of miscreants swooped on him with sharpe weapons around 6:45pm on Thursday when he was going to the market. Due to the indiscriminate blows with sharp weapons, his left leg was severed from the ankle and he was injured in various parts of his body, including his hand, chest, neck.

He was rescued and taken to the Upazila Health Complex. Farhana Akhter, a doctor on duty at the emergency department, provided him with primary treatment and sent him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

He died while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital around 9:45pm.

Police initially suspect that Shafiqul Islam may have been attacked due to personal enmity.

Police say that the matter is being investigated, including collecting CCTV footage from the scene. A drive is underway to arrest the culprits involved.
