Protest sparks tension near Jamuna, security tightened
Tensions rose in capital's Gulistan to Kakrail area on Friday as the National Citizen Party (NCP) staged a protest demanding a ban on the Awami League. Security was heightened after chaos erupted near 'Jamuna', the chief adviser’s residence.
Around 2:10 pm on Friday (9 May), protesters in front of Jamuna attempted to break through police barricades, sparking chaos. Law enforcement quickly heightened their alert and reinforced security.
Meanwhile, security has been intensified around the Jamuna area in anticipation of the rally. Police have blocked all vehicular movement by setting up barricades from Hotel Intercontinental to Kakrail Road. A significant deployment of police and RAB personnel has been made. Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the matter.
Several law enforcement officials stated that while peaceful demonstrations would be allowed to continue, any signs of unrest or violence would be met with firm action.
The protest initially began around 10.00pm on Thursday night in front of the Jamuna residence, with participation from NCP members and activists from other political groups. On Friday around noon, the demonstrators relocated from Jamuna and set up a 'Jomayet Mancha' near Hotel Intercontinental, marching to the new location in a procession.
