Former member of parliament for Sylhet-2 and central leader of the Jatiya Party, Yahya Chowdhury, has been held by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). He was taken into custody by RAB-9 and RAB-1 on Tuesday around 12:30am from a house in the Dhaka's Uttara. In a press release, RAB-9’s Assistant Superintendent of Police (Media), Md Mashiur Rahman Sohel, confirmed the matter. A case had been filed against the former MP at the Kotwali police station on October 2, accusing him of assaulting students and citizens during an anti-discrimination movement. Yahya Chowdhury was elected member of parliament from Sylhet-2 in 2014 as a Jatiya Party candidate. He also served as a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

সাবেক সংসদ সদস্য ও জাতীয় পার্টির কেন্দ্রীয় নেতা ইয়াহিয়া চৌধুরীকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়েছে। সোমবার (১১ নভেম্বর) দিবাগত রাতে রাজধানীর উত্তরার একটি বাসা থেকে র‍্যাব-১ ও র‍্যাব-৯ এর যৌথ অভিযানে তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়। মঙ্গলবার সকালে র‌্যাব-৯ এর সহকারী পুলিশ সুপার (মিডিয়া) মো. মশিউর রহমান সোহেল স্বাক্ষরিত এক সংবাদ বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে এ তথ্য জানানো হয়। বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে আরও বলা হয়, বৈষম্যবিরোধী আন্দোলনের সময় শিক্ষার্থী ও নাগরিকদের লাঞ্ছিত করার অভিযোগে গত ২ অক্টোবর কোতোয়ালি থানায় এই সাবেক সংসদ সদস্যের বিরুদ্ধে মামলা দায়ের করা হয়। উল্লেখ্য, ২০১৪ সালে সিলেট-২ (বিশ্বনাথ-ওসমানীনগর উপজেলা) আসন থেকে সংসদ সদস্য নির্বাচিত হন ইয়াহিয়া চৌধুরী। এ ছাড়াও তিনি পরিবেশ ও বন মন্ত্রণালয় সম্পর্কিত সংসদীয় স্থায়ী কমিটির সদস্য হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।
