Recommendations made to make electoral arena corruption-free: Badiul Alam Majumder

Election Reform Commission chief Badiul Alam Majumder said that the reform proposal in the election system has been made not for any malicious purpose, but to make the electoral arena corruption-free.

He said this during a discussion with members of the Federation of Journalists of Bangladesh (RFED) at the Election Commission (EC) building in Agargaon in the capital on Tuesday (January 21).

Badiul Alam Majumder said that no one should be kept away from the election; the Election Reform Commission has recommended to make the electoral system corruption-free. The Election Reform Commission has not undermined the power of the Election Commission, but has made various proposals to empower this organization.

In response to a question that fugitive accused, those convicted in a court of law are ineligible, those involved in disappearances and murders or money laundering cannot participate in the election - are these controversial at this time? Badiul Alam said that murderers cannot participate in the election. This recommendation has been given based on public opinion.

He further said that holding the Election Commission accountable will not reduce their power, and that only if the EC is held accountable will there be no repeat of the three elections of the previous Awami League government.

Meanwhile, at another event, Director General of the National Identity Card Registration Division, ASM Humayun Kabir, said that the Election Commission has started the work of updating the voter list of those injured in the July-August movement and undergoing treatment in hospitals through the biometric process.

He further said that their national identity cards will be handed over to them within a week and a half. Those who have suffered injuries to their eyes and fingers will be given NIDs under the EC's instructions. In addition to new voters, the injured will also get smart cards and the opportunity to correct mistakes. In addition, those injured in the movement and their family members undergoing treatment in all hospitals across the country will receive this service.
