Remal causes coastal flooding, countrywide rainfall
It has been reported that the entire country, including Dhaka, will experience rain and gusty winds on Monday (May 27), due to the impact of Cyclone Remal.
Remal struck the coast late Sunday night, unleashing gale-force winds across the coastal districts with speeds reaching 90 to 120 km per hour. This impact also led to flooding in several areas.
According to today's special notice no. 17 from the Meteorological Department, Cyclone Remal progressed northward and made landfall on the West Bengal-Khepupara coast, southwest of Mongla. Wind speeds are sustained at 90 km/h within 64 km of the cyclone center, with gusts or gales reaching up to 120 km/h.
Meteorologist Dr. Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallick from the Department of Meteorology explained, "Although cyclones typically weaken during landfall and subsequent rainfall, Remal is currently maintaining its strength as it crosses the coast. There is concern that this storm may further intensify before making landfall."
"Remal is continuing its trend of weakening, transitioning from a severe cyclone to a cyclonic storm. The forecast indicates its further progression into a land depression, moving towards the northern regions of the country. If the depression becomes trapped, Bangladesh could expect intermittent rains until May 28th," he added.
