Rezwana Choudhury Bannya receives 'Padma Shri' from president of India
Rezwana Chowdhury Bannya, a famous Rabindra Sangeet singer of the subcontinent, received the Padma Shri award from India’s President Draupadi Murmu.
She received the award at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi on Monday (April 22) evening, reports Indian news agency ANI.
The report cited Bannya's contribution and dedication to popularize Rabindra Sangeet in Bangladesh. Along with this, the bhajan 'Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahye' sung by Bannya on Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birthday was also mentioned.
This year, the Government of India has awarded Padma Vibhushan to five meritorious persons, Padma Bhushan to 17 persons and Padma Shri to 110 persons for their important contributions in various fields.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were present at the event despite busyness due to the election campaign.
The Modi government announced the names of Padma Shri awardees on the eve of Republic Day. Rezwana Chowdhury Bannya of Bangladesh was in the list of Padma Shri award recipients. It is the fourth highest civilian award in India.
