Sagar-Runi Human Rights Photo Award launched

The first-ever Sagar Runi Human Rights Photo Award was held at the Nalini Kanta Bhattasali Gallery of the National Museum on Saturday to preserve the memory of the Sagar Runi murder and strengthen the demand for justice.

Organized by the Sagar-Runi Foundation, the aim of this award is to highlight the voices of marginalized people, portray social injustice and use the power of photography for equality and freedom. Out of 90 photographers, a total of 10 best photographers were awarded. The awardees are - Mohammad Tasawer Islam, Mehdi Hasan, Dipu Malakar, Syed Mahbubul Kader, Md. Nusayeb Bin Khaled, Abdullah Zubair, Mohammad Shahnewaz Khan, Nurunnahar Nargis and Alvi Daiwan.

In addition, the exhibition of the paintings will continue at the Nalinikanta Bhattasali Gallery with 39 more paintings until February 19.

Adilur Rahman Khan (Advisor, Ministry of Industries and Housing and Public Works) was present as the chief guest at the event. Syeda Rizwana Hasan (Adviser, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change) was present as the special guest. Although she could not be present. In addition, lawyer and human rights activist Advocate Elina Khan and Barrister Shishir Monir, the lawyer responsible for the Sagar-Runi murder case, were present as guests.

Barrister Shishir Monir said about the trial of the Sagar-Runi murder, “A task force has already been formed after the application was made to the High Court Division regarding the Sagar-Runi murder. Its report is scheduled to be submitted to the High Court Division on April 4. Along with this, we have had a meeting with the Investigation Task Force and important people are being questioned. Now I feel like the mystery of this murder will be revealed very soon.”

There are plans to organize the Sagar-Runi Human Rights Photo Award on a larger scale in the future, said Nowsher Roman.
