The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday has scheduled May 13 to resume the hearing on Jamaat-e-Islami's appeal challenging a High Court verdict that cancelled its registration with the Election Commission (EC) as a political party.

A full bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, set the date in response to a petition submitted by Jamaat’s lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Manir.

The High Court had originally revoked Jamaat's registration on August 1, 2013, following a writ petition filed in 2009 by Maulana Syed Rezaul Haque Chandpuri, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Tariqat Federation, along with 24 others. The petition argued that Jamaat’s registration with the EC was unconstitutional.

Subsequently, the Election Commission officially cancelled Jamaat's registration in October 2018, just before the 11th national parliamentary election.

Jamaat-e-Islami later filed an appeal with the Appellate Division, challenging the High Court’s ruling. The Supreme Court began hearing the appeal on December 3 of last year.
