Several suspected AL men beaten up, handed over to police
Several individuals were beaten by the public and handed over to the police on suspicion of being affiliated with the Awami League in Dhaka's Gulistan.
The incident took place in front of the Awami League office on Bangabandhu Avenue around 11:30am on Sunday.
Tensions have been running high in Gulistan, Dhaka, as Awami League and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, are to hold separate programs in the area on Sunday.
The Awami League announced a protest march at 3pm at Gulistan's Zero Point to mark Noor Hossain Day.
They call for the removal of undemocratic forces while demanding the restoration of democratic processes.
In response, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement vowed to thwart this rally and announced a counter-program by holding a public rally at the same place at 12pm.
Since last night, the students have taken position around Zero Point, with activists from various political factions, including the BNP, gathering to counter the Awami League's program.
The area is now under heavy surveillance, and law enforcement agencies have set up multiple checkpoints fearing clashes.
