Renowned Bangladeshi figure Dr. Shahidul Alam, known for his prowess as a photographer, writer, educator, and activist, has made public his decision to return the Honorary Doctorate conferred upon him by the University of the Arts London (UAL) in the UK.

This information was conveyed through a press release by Drik Picture Library Limited on Sunday (June 2).

Shahidul Alam was bestowed with the Honorary Doctorate from the University at the Royal Festival Hall in London on July 8, 2022, in appreciation of his exceptional impact on the realms of photography and activism.

In the press release, Shahidul Alam conveyed, "Upon receiving the degree, I observed the University of Arts London's dedication to freedom of expression. The students of this institution have exhibited solidarity with Palestine. Additionally, I urged the university administration to endorse the ceasefire in Gaza. This aspect persuaded me."

"However, any sense of relief dissipated when I observed the stance of the administration, particularly that of the current vice-chancellor of the university, which was contradictory. Students have consistently voiced concerns about the suppression of their voices. Through partnerships with Israeli or Israeli-affiliated organizations and institutions, this UK university becomes complicit in Israel's occupation, apartheid, and ongoing genocide," he added.

Shahidul Alam has officially informed the University of Arts London of his decision to return the honorary doctorate, expressing his desire to sever ties with the institution amid the current circumstances.
