Shakib apologises for remaining silent during student movement
Former captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team, Shakib Al Hasan, has expressed regret over his silent role during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in July and August.
Shakib Al Hasan was not in the country during the anti-discrimination movement.
Despite his absence, he did not make any comments on social media, while many of his fellow cricketers were actively vocal. His silence during the movement drew significant criticism. After remaining quiet for some time, the left-handed all-rounder expressed his regret on social media Wednesday night.
In a lengthy post on his verified Facebook page, Shakib addressed the anti-discrimination student movement that saw many students injured or killed due to police gunfire in June and July. During this time, many in the country, including several cricketers, stood in support of the students, while only Shakib and Mashrafe Bin Mortuza, both associated with the ruling party, remained silent.
His response to a fan's question about the quota movement while participating in the Global T20 League in Canada further complicated matters. Additionally, as the death toll rose from police firing in Bangladesh, Shakib was on a safari trip with his wife and children, sharing photos on social media.
