South Africa secured their place in the 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship final with a tense two-wicket victory over Pakistan in the first Test at Centurion on Sunday (29 December).

Chasing 148, the Proteas overcame a stunning six-wicket haul from Mohammad Abbas, with Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen’s unbroken 51-run stand rescuing them from 99 for 8 to seal the win.

The victory makes South Africa the first team to qualify for the final at Lord's in June 2025. They lead the WTC standings with 66.67% points, ahead of Australia and India, who are vying for the second spot. The defeat, however, ended Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the final, pushing them down to eighth in the standings.

The second and final Test of the series begins in Cape Town on 3 January 2025.
