Suspected mugger killed in mob beating in Old Dhaka

A young man was beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of mugging in Old Dhaka, leaving two others injured. The incident occurred around 5:00am on Friday (March 21) in the Swarighat area of Old Dhaka.

The deceased has been identified as Md Asif (19), son of Md Jahir from Kamrangirchar. However, the identities of the injured remain unknown.

Inspector Abul Khayer of Chawkbazar Police Station stated, "The incident initially began in the Jinjira Ghat area of Keraniganj, where three individuals attempted a mugging. Locals chased them, capturing one, while the other two jumped into the river. They swam across to the Chompatoli Ghat area of Swarighat under Chawkbazar Police Station, where they were caught and beaten by locals."

"All three individuals were rescued and taken to Midford Hospital. As their condition worsened, they were transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 7:30am. After examination, the on-duty doctor pronounced one of them dead, while the other two remain under treatment," he added.
