Teacher stabbed for prohibiting public smoking
Shamim Hussain, a college teacher, and his brother were reportedly stabbed after intervening to stop a group of boys from smoking in public in Kushtia. At the same time, the teacher's house was vandalized.
The incident took place around 9.00pm on Friday (April 19) in Faraji Para of Hatsh Haripur Union under Sadar Upazila.
Shamim Hossain, the victim of the stabbing, teaches economics at Halsa College in Mirpur Upazila. The injured were admitted to Kushtia General Hospital at night.
According to local sources and the police, on Friday (April 19) around 7:30 pm, a group of young individuals were smoking cigarettes in a shop adjacent to Faraji Para Jame Masjid. Teacher Shamim Hossain intervened and asked them to stop smoking, leading to an altercation. Subsequently, local youths named Joy, Pranto, Jisan, Safayet, Rabbi, and Habibur Rahman Happis allegedly stabbed and assaulted teacher Shamim and his brother, Shaheen Biswas. Concurrently, they vandalized the teacher's residence before fleeing the scene.
Later, Shamim and his brother Shaheen Biswas were rescued by locals and taken to Kushtia General Hospital for treatment. On the same night, teacher Shamim Hossain visited Kushtia Model Police Station and filed a case, naming seven individuals involved in the incident. Subsequently, the police arrested two of the accused.
Sheikh Sohail Rana, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kushtia Model Police Station, said, "The court has sent the two accused in this case to jail. Operations are underway to apprehend the other accused.
