A teacher has been sent to jail on charges of throwing a four-year-old child, Miftahul Mawa, into a pond in Burichong, Comilla, for playing with sand.

The court of Cumilla Senior Judicial Magistrate Mominul Islam passed the order on Tuesday.

Police Inspector Mujibur Rahman of the court confirmed this information.

The incident took place on January 16 when the kid was playing with sand on the side of the road at the house of Manjur Ali Sarda in Purbapara, Burichong Sadar Union. At that time, teacher Shahjahan Fazlur got angry and threw her into a nearby pond when the matter came to his attention.

A video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking a storm of criticism. That night, the injured child's mother, Samshun Nahar Tania, filed a case with Burichong Police Station. Since then, Shahjahan Fazlur Rahman has been in hiding.

However, after the police arrested him in a raid and produced him in court, the judge rejected his bail plea and sent him to jail.

Shahjahan is a teacher at Fazlur Rahman Memorial College of Technology. The injured child, Mawa, is the daughter of Nazir Ahmed, a Saudi expatriate from Manjur Ali Sardar's house in Purbapara.
