Tidal flood submerges low-lying areas in Cox's Bazar, people rushing to shelters
The sea level has risen under the influence of Cyclone Remal flooding the low-lying areas in Cox's Bazar. Tidewater has entered several houses in Samiti Para, Qutubdia Para, Madhyam Qutubdia Para, Fodnar Dale, Nazirartek areas of the city, increasing the sufferings of the local people.
It has been drizzling since Sunday (May 26) morning in Cox's Bazar. At the same time, a gusty wind is blowing. The water level in the sea has increased by four to five feet. Huge waves are crashing on the beach. People in flooded areas have already started moving to shelters. Volunteers of Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP), Red Crescent and Cox's Bazar Municipality are working to evacuate the residents safely.
Akhtar Kamal Azad, councilor of Ward No-1 of Cox's Bazar Municipality, said, "Tide water has entered the areas next to the sea. As a result, people are going to shelters. We are working to alleviate the suffering of the people.”
Assistant Meteorologist of Cox's Bazar Md Abdul Hannan said, “Cyclone Remal is currently located 340 kilometers southwest of Cox's Bazar seaport. It is constantly moving towards the north. The storm is likely to hit the coast this Sunday evening or night.”
Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Shahin Imran said, “Extensive preparations have been made to deal with Cyclone Remal. A control room has been opened to maintain overall communication during emergencies. The control room mobile number is 01872615132. Some 638 shelters are ready to accommodate people and sufficient dry food has been stocked.”
