Why are so many citizens invisible to state law?
It is the responsibility of the state to register the birth of its citizens. The Bangladesh government has made significant strides in this regard. However, according to the latest census, over 17 percent of the population still does not have a birth certificate. This translates to approximately 29.2 million people without birth registration. Such information was revealed in a socio-economic demographic survey conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) last Wednesday (June 12).
Let the harassment stop at every step
The registration of citizens' births and deaths is the responsibility of the state. It is recognized in the United Nations Convention on Human Rights. However, according to UNICEF research, nearly 230 million children worldwide remain unregistered. Bangladesh is no exception. In our country, according to the Birth Registration Act of 2004, everyone is required to complete the birth and death registration process within 45 days of birth, regardless of race, religion, color, ethnicity, or gender. However, there is considerable disorder in the proper enforcement of this rule at the government level, which is highly unfortunate and undesirable.
Fake birth registration of 153 Rohingyas, UP chairman suspended
The Local Government Division has temporarily suspended the chairman of a union at Rajnagar upazila in Moulvibazar on charges of providing fake birth registrations for 153 Rohingyas.
