Let the proposal for 100% free primary healthcare be implemented
Health is a fundamental human right. For building a developed and humane society, affordable and uninterrupted access to healthcare is extremely important. However, the reality is that a large portion of the population in our country—especially those living in rural areas—are still deprived of essential primary healthcare. And those who do receive it often have to bear high costs. To address this situation, making primary healthcare 100% free is now a demand of the time. The encouraging news is that the Health Sector Reform Commission has proposed the provision of 100% free primary healthcare. Additionally, they have recommended amending the Constitution to include primary healthcare as a fundamental right.
Lowering internet prices could unlock major opportunities
There is no doubt that internet speed in our country—whether through fixed broadband or mobile internet—still lags behind in comparison to many other places. The silver lining, however, is that the current interim government's telecom leadership has shown genuine intent to make quality internet services available at affordable prices for the people. If this intent is matched with trust and cooperation from the operators who understand the value of internet at various levels, then delivering quality service at a lower cost isn’t a far-fetched goal.
Complete judge appointment process quickly
In Bangladesh, land disputes make up the majority of cases. To resolve land-related disputes, the government established Land Survey Appeal Tribunals for the first time in 54 districts in August 2023. However, news received on Thursday (March 20) revealed that although the tribunals and appeal tribunals have been established, judges have not yet been appointed. As a result, millions of cases are pending in these tribunals. Due to the prolonged delay in resolving cases, several hundred thousand people, both plaintiffs and defendants in nearly four hundred thousand pending cases, are facing harassment.
Why is the evening healthcare services discontinued?
According to reports received from the media on Monday (March 3), the evening healthcare service was stopped without any prior notice. Hospital authorities stated that although evening services were initiated, the lack of publicity has resulted in low turnout. Furthermore, after the July revolution, most doctors from rural health complexes were brought to Dhaka. As a result, due to a shortage of doctors, the service was effectively stopped. Health Ministry officials have stated that the evening healthcare service will not be resumed. However, the government is planning to offer services through a referral system across the country.
Eliminate ambiguity around reforms for public
As time passes, the public's doubts about the reforms continue to grow more obscure. Many people still have no clear idea about what reforms will take place and when. While reports from four reform commissions have been submitted to the Chief Adviser, they lack a clear outline, and some of the recommendations have already sparked criticism. Although there are some positive aspects in the reform commission reports, certain issues are seen as problematic by the country's civil society. Out of 11 reform commissions, the reports of seven more are still pending, and it is uncertain when these will be submitted to the Chief Adviser.
