Eid in Childhood
ISPR requests not to get misled by rumours over security of St. Martin’s
Inter Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) has urged all not to be misguided by rumours spreading through social media over the security of St. Martin’s island centering Myanmar's ongoing internal conflict near the island.
In my childhood, I was very naughty and foolish
Occasionally, I narrate stories to my young students. Imagine, you borrowed 100 taka from your mother in some way, and you decided to treat yourself with your friends at a restaurant. The joy of indulging in this feast surely brings a sense of delight. However, imagine if something else happened when you stepped out of your house; imagine encountering a frail, malnourished person on the street and unconscious due to starvation. Looking at them, if a wave of empathy surged within you, suddenly, going to the restaurant with your friends and splurging on a meal might feel like a sinful act.
As if eid joy depends on spending a lot
After so many years, at this age, when I look towards eid celebrations, I see many phases. I have celebrated eid many times in home and abroad. When it comes to childhood eid memories, I directly go back in the 50s. I was born in Tikatuli in 1952. Due to this significant reason, I don't have any memories before 1955. It means my memories date back to when I was three years old. What I remember from the age of three is that the neighbourhoods were like family. People often nostalgically say, 'Oh, how beautiful the neighboruhoods were before—not that actually. The point is, the neighbourhoods were organic before. Now, it's all through social media. It wasn't like that before.
Tk2 note was my preferred eid salaami
Among the two major religious festivals of Muslims worldwide, Eid-ul-Fitr holds a special place by any measure. This religious festival comes after a month of strict fasting. Many fasting Muslims feel the urge to give of themselves as they celebrate this eid and give as much charity as they can. Eid brings a message of joy to everyone, rich and poor. The message of joy and happiness comes out as more practical for the poor when the rich extend their hands in support.
Eid joy lost in artificiality
People of my age notice a stark contrast between the Eid in the present days and in our childhood. Back then, sighting the Eid moon was the main aspect of Eid joy. Nowadays, that excitement has faded away. We'd eagerly gather on rooftops to spot the moon, sparking arguments among siblings about who saw it first.
