Increase supply of goods in TCB trucks
The purpose of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is to maintain market stability and provide essential goods at fair prices to the general and lower-income people by storing some essential commodities and selling them during emergencies. Initially, TCB's supply of goods was quite sufficient. However, over time, while the queues of buyers have grown longer, the supply of goods on the trucks has been decreasing.
Why the US election matters to the world
A story from November 4. No, it's not a surreal or magical tale; it's a true story. I entered Karwan Bazar, the largest wholesale kitchen market in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, around noon. Along both sides of the street, a number of impoverished, underprivileged, uneducated, and working-class people were selling vegetables. Suddenly, I overheard one of them speaking in their regional dialect, saying, “This time, Trump will win.” My ears perked up. An interesting discussion! I stopped and stood still. I saw a man in a worn-out vest, a lungi (traditional cloth worn around the waist), and barefoot, selling red spinach and malabar spinach. Another vendor, in a similar condition, nodded in agreement to what the first one said.
Ensuring safe lifts for all
In Dhaka, most offices, courts, hospitals, and educational institutions have such old lifts that using them often feels like risking one’s life. Many lifts shake, and if overloaded, they make terrifying noises. Yet, people continue to use these lifts despite the danger. Incidents of fatalities while using lifts occasionally make the news, but there is a lack of awareness from both the institutions and the lift users.
The anarchy of bottled water
The price of a half-liter bottle of water (slightly more than a glass) is 20 taka. A carton contains 24 bottles and costs 260 taka. I bought it myself from Karwan Bazar at this price. Retailers also buy it at the same rate. This means the purchase price of each bottle is less than 11 taka, and the retailer profits 9 taka per bottle!
