Middle East Anarchy: Western Support for Israel Fuels Regional Tensions

Eleven people lost their lives in an Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus, the capital of Syria. Among the deceased were Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, the senior commander of the elite Quds Force, and his deputy, Brigadier General Mohammad Hadi Haji-Rahimi. Despite the presence of US and Russian military bases in Syria, Iran denies having military bases there. However, Iranian troops sent to provide advice to President Bashar al-Assad's forces in the Syrian civil war remain stationed in the region.

Boycotting India will not benefit Bangladesh

A social media campaign has been going on for quite some time urging the countrymen to boycott Indian products. The campaigners are announcing that they will use products made in Bangladesh or any other country instead of Indian products. Expressing solidarity with the social media movement to boycott Indian products, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi set fire to an Indian shawl in front of the party’s Naya Paltan office in the capital. I assumed that BNP leaders and activists would now continue to bring Indian products including sarees and shawls from their homes and burn them on the streets. But after Naya Paltan there was no such burning campaign of Indian products.

Kumudini Hajong: A guiding light in the Tonko movement

Kumudini Hajong, the leader of the Hajong community during the historic Tonko movement under British rule, has passed away at the age of 102 in her hometown of Netrakona. She led the rebellion against landlords' unjust rent collection, and among the Hajongs who fought against British and Zaminders oppression, she was the sole survivor to witness that era. Born in Baheratali village at the foothills of the Garo hills in Durgapur upazila of Netrakona district, Kumudini Hajong did not have access to formal education due to the absence of educational institutions in the area, including her village. Nonetheless, she remained a dedicated member of the Communist Party of Bangladesh throughout her life and played a significant role in inaugurating the Comrade Mani Singh Memorial Museum in Susong Durgapur, Netrakona.

I am not a musician. I am a music enthusiast. I love listening to songs. Even though I am a music lover, I do not enjoy all types of songs. I seldom listen to band music. I listen to Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti. I listen to Atulprasad, Rajanikanta, D.L. Roy, old and modern folk songs. I am particularly attracted to Rabindra Sangeet. I may not always understand Tagore's lyrics, but the melody captivates me.

On February 29, 2024, a devastating fire engulfed a multi-story building on Bailey Road in Dhaka, claiming the lives of 46 people. Those injured were in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could rise. Most of the floors of this seven-story building housed food stalls, with gas cylinders used for cooking. All the restaurants had their gas cylinders stacked up, and as the cylinders caught fire, people were unable to escape due to the barricades. The explosion of a cylinder on the ground floor caused the fire to spread rapidly. The survivors were so severely burnt that DNA samples had to be taken from relatives to identify them. Some struggled to survive with life-threatening injuries. The incident was heart-wrenching and tragic; it left the entire nation in shock at the severity of the tragedy.

Aaron Bushnell's Suicide: A Call to Conscience and Collective Responsibility

Aaron Bushnell, a member of the US Air Force, tragically ended his life by self-immolation in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington. His act was a stark protest against the unyielding support provided by the US to the ongoing violence inflicted by the Israeli military in Gaza. At just twenty-five years old, Bushnell's premature death serves as a poignant statement against this support. As flames engulfed his body, his cries rang out: 'Free Palestine, Free Palestine.' I watched the video of his suicide only once.

Reducing inflation is much more difficult than controlling protests

According to the Awami League general secretary, reducing inflation is more important for the new government than focusing on the opposition movement; but reducing inflation is much more difficult than controlling protests. The government and the Bangladesh Bank are not following Sri Lanka's path to reduce inflation, as discussed extensively in various knowledgeable discussions in prominent newspapers and talk shows. Listening to these discussions, it seems that bring inflation down is very easy; we just need to implement the suggestions of economists and talk show experts.
