UP chairman gets life sentence in rape case

A court in Jhenaidah sentenced Khandaker Farukuzzaman Farid, a UP chairman, to life imprisonment and imposed a Tk 5 lakh fine in a rape case.

Judge Mizanur Rahman of the Jhenaidah Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Tuesday (May 28). 

Convicted Farukuzzaman Farid is the chairman of the Harishankarpur Union Parishad of Sadar Upazila.

According to the court, on the afternoon of April 15, 2022, the victim visited Chairman Farid's home in Narahridra village, seeking justice. The chairman allegedly raped her while consuming intoxicants in an empty house. The victim was admitted to Sadar Hospital the next day.

Later, the victim filed a case against the chairman and his cousin.
