UP secretary held for issuing birth registration to Rohingya man

Detectives have pucked up Cumilla Sadar Union Parishad Secretary Ismail Hossain for allegedly giving a birth registration to a Rohingya youth in Muradnagar Upazila.

A team of Detective Branch of police held him from Nimaikandi area of ​​Companyganj-Muradnagar road on Thursday evening.

According to police sources, on February 15 this year, a Rohingya youth named Yasin, 19, was captured after coming to Cumilla Regional Passport Office in Ghorashal village of Sadar Union of Muradnagar Upazila to get a passport under a fake identity. The passport office officials then handed him over to the Cumilla District Detective Police.

During the preliminary interrogation, the Rohingya youth said that after coming to Bangladesh from Myanmar, he lived in Block-9 of Cox's Bazar Balukhali Rohingya Camp. His cousin Osman gave the passport contract to 2 brokers-- Hasan Mahmud and Mosharraf--of Medina Travels adjacent to the district Regional Passport Office. Later, according to the contract, Hasan Mahmud and Mosharraf prepared all the documents of the Rohingya youth at the fake address of Paschim Ghorashal village of Muradnagar upazila of the district.

Detective police filed a case in this regard with Kotwali Police Station. The detectives later found information about the involvement of UP Secretary Ismail Hossain and some others during the investigation.

Many sources, who do not wish to be named, said that UP Secretary Ismail and many others of that union are involved in the scam. They used to charge Tk2 lakh for each registration.

Sadar UP Chairman Kazi Tufreez said, "I have given the highest privilege to the secretary. Then why should he do this? Those who have done this in exchange of money will be punished."

Comilla District Detective Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rajesh Barua said that UP Secretary Ismail has been detained based on specific information.

Muradnagar Upazila Acting Executive Officer (UNO) Sifat Uddin also confirmed the matter.
