Voting begins in BGMEA election

Voting is underway in the election of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the leading body representing garment industry owners.

The voting started at 8:00am on Saturday (May 31). It is taking place simultaneously at two centers—Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel in Dhaka and Radisson Blu Bay View Hotel in Chattogram. Voting will continue until 5:00pm.

In this election, the Forum panel is led by Mahmud Hasan Khan, Managing Director of Rising Fashions and a former vice-president of BGMEA. On the other hand, the Sammilita Parishad panel is led by Md. Abul Kalam, Managing Director of Chaiti Group and a former director of the organization.

Three alliances are contesting for 35 director posts—Forum, Sammilita Parishad, and Oikko Parishad. However, the main contest is expected to be between Forum and Sammilita Parishad, as both panels have fielded full slates of candidates in both centers. Oikko Parishad has nominated candidates for only 6 posts.

A total of 1,864 voters are participating in this election, with 1,561 casting their votes in Dhaka and 303 in Chattogram. In the previous election, the voter count stood at 2,496.
