Nari Maitree has conducted a workshop for journalists on the country's Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system.

Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) helped organise the workshop with the aim of increasing media knowledge and strengthening advocacy to make the CRVS system more effective, inclusive and accessible.

Nari Maitree's Program Director Khaled Bin Yusuf and GHAI's Bangladesh Country Lead Muhammad Ruhul Quddus inaugurated the workshop at the Bishwa Sahitya Kendra auditorium in the capital on Sunday (December 22).

During the day-long workshop, experts, panelists and participating journalists discussed the current status of the country's CRVS system in detail and made recommendations.

Sifat Jahan, project manager of Nari Maitree, presented a detailed analysis of the existing birth and death registration policies, implementation challenges and barriers. The session was enriched with lively discussions, real stories and testimonies from community representatives and participants.

Vital Strategies Country Coordinators Md Nazrul Islam and Md Moyeen Uddin gave detailed presentations on CRVS policies and development strategies.

Md Nazrul Islam highlighted the responsibilities and duties of registrars and the media as important partners in the development of the system.

Moin Uddin discussed the need for death registration and the importance of investigating the cause of death, which is an important component of the CRVS framework.

Journalists collaborated in formulating the vision of media coverage related to CRVS in the plenary session led by Mir Masrur Zaman of Channel i. He encouraged journalists to adopt innovative approaches and emphasised on producing solution-oriented reports in line with the policies of media houses as per the needs of the society.

Muhammad Ruhul Quddus stressed on making the birth and death registration process simple and accessible to all. He said, “We want the government to make the existing birth and death registration policies simple, inclusive and accessible to all. An effective CRVS system is also essential for good governance, planning and protection of individual rights.”

Shaheen Akhter Dolly, executive director of Nari Maitree, called on journalists to work on sustainable media advocacy to address the challenges of the CRVS system and strengthen the legal framework to ensure inclusiveness and accessibility.
