Environment for fair elections created: Mirza Fakhrul
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that after overcoming many hurdles, movements, bloodshed and sacrifices, the people have finally gained an opportunity to witness fair elections. Following this mass uprising, a new chance has emerged to rebuild Bangladesh.
He said that under the leadership of Dr Muhammad Yunus, the interim government has formed several reform commissions. Through these commissions, they have signed reform charters. At present, a situation and environment conducive to free and fair elections has been created in the country.
He made these remarks at an event held at the BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Monday, December 1. BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed was present.
Mirza Fakhrul said the interim government has already announced that the election will be held in February 2026. Preparations are under way accordingly. We are very hopeful that the people of the country will seize this opportunity to form a representative parliament. Through that parliament, they will establish a democratic government for the people.
He said the BNP has been in state power multiple times. From our experience, we can say that if the BNP is given the responsibility to govern, it will certainly be able to build a truly democratic and prosperous economy in the country.
Speaking about Begum Khaleda Zia’s health, he said the chairperson is currently very ill and undergoing treatment in hospital. People across the country are praying for her recovery. We request prayers for her, so that Allah grants her a quick recovery, returns her to us and allows her to work for the country again.
When asked about her latest physical condition, the BNP secretary general said her medical matters are being supervised by Dr Zahid. He can surely provide detailed information. I can only say she is unwell, and our doctors are trying their best. Both local and foreign doctors are involved in her treatment.
