EU reaffirms support for financial oversight and reform in Bangladesh
The European Union (EU) has reiterated its commitment to strengthening democratic oversight and financial governance in Bangladesh, with a focus on empowering the next Parliament to ensure greater transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.
Speaking at a high-level event in Dhaka on Wednesday, EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller emphasized the EU’s role in supporting public financial management (PFM) reforms and institutional capacity-building.
“The European Union stands with Bangladesh at this pivotal moment. We support the delivery of an ambitious reform agenda,” said Ambassador Miller.
He highlighted ongoing EU efforts, including support for digitizing tax policy and return systems, and reinforcing the independence of the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General a key step toward sustaining long-term structural reform.
Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, the event’s chief guest, underscored the importance of continued reform and praised the EU’s enduring partnership in driving improvements across governance sectors.
Also present were Md Nurul Islam, Comptroller and Auditor General; Md Abdur Rahman Khan, Chairman of the National Board of Revenue; Dr. Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder, Secretary of the Finance Division; and Md Mizanur Rahman, Secretary of the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat.
Representatives from these three key institutions shared progress, lessons learned, and future plans to further institutional reform.
Hosted by the EU, the event spotlighted its support through a Technical Assistance Programme—implemented by DT Global—which plays a vital role in improving financial accountability and institutional governance in Bangladesh.
The EU stressed that its support is aimed at fostering a future where public finances in Bangladesh are transparent, accountable, and aligned with the needs of its citizens—ultimately building public trust, supporting inclusive development, and promoting long-term prosperity.
