European Parliament delegation to visit Bangladesh on Sep 16
A five-member delegation from the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Human Rights will visit Bangladesh from September 16 to 18 to discuss human rights issues and review the situation of displaced Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar.
During the three-day visit, the delegation will meet representatives of the interim government, NGOs, civil society organizations, labour groups, and multilateral agencies.
They will also visit the Rohingya refugee camps to assess the humanitarian conditions of approximately one million refugees who fled Myanmar in 2017.
The visit comes as Bangladesh undergoes a political transition following the 2024 popular uprising and the removal of Sheikh Hasina.
The interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, has initiated reforms in the electoral system, judiciary, and other key state institutions.
The delegation will be led by Mounir Satouri (Greens/EFA, France) and includes Isabel Wiseler-Lima (EPP, Luxembourg), Arkadiusz Mularczyk (ECR, Poland), Urmas Paet (Renew Europe, Estonia), and Catarina Vieira (Greens/EFA, Netherlands).
The visit coincides with the resumption of negotiations between Bangladesh and the EU on a new Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA).
