Everyone must rise to save the Teesta: Mirza Fakhrul
BNP secretary general and party-nominated Sheaf of Paddy candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on people to rise to save the Teesta, saying India has failed to resolve the long-standing issue of Teesta water sharing.
He made the remarks on Saturday, February 7, while speaking as chief guest at the unveiling of the book Jago Bahe Teesta Bachai, written by BNP leader Asadul Habib Dulu, at the JR Community Centre in Thakurgaon town.
Mirza Fakhrul said BNP has long raised the demand for Teesta water, but India has yet to offer any solution. International law requires equitable water sharing, he said, adding that India has not provided Bangladesh its due share and has often deflected responsibility onto the West Bengal government.
He said the Teesta would not have dried up this way if Bangladesh had received its rightful share of water. He added that BNP has discussed a Teesta mega project and believes the river must be saved through such a comprehensive plan.
BNP Rangpur divisional organising secretary Asadul Habib Dulu, Thakurgaon district BNP general secretary Paigam Ali and leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies were present.
