Ex-bank official dies after shooting himself in Chattogram
A former bank official died after allegedly shooting himself in the head with a pistol at his residence in Chattogram on Saturday morning (August 22).
Shahid Hossain, 45, son of late Iqbal Hossain, was found critically injured at a house in the Hajipara area under Double Mooring police station.
According to police and hospital sources, Shahid allegedly shot himself in the head with a pistol in the drawing room of Imam Hossain’s residence at around 7:45am. Hearing the gunshot, family members rushed him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
He was initially treated in the emergency department and later admitted to Ward 28, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Shahid’s wife, Sharmin Akter, said the family heard a loud sound from the drawing room and found him lying on the floor in a bloodied condition. She said they had occasional domestic disputes but did not know he had a firearm.
The couple have two children, while Sharmin is seven months pregnant.
Shahinur Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Double Mooring Police Station, said, Shahid was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound and died during treatment.
"Preliminarily, we suspect it was a suicide," the officer said, adding that police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police are also examining whether the pistol used in the incident was legally owned. Shahid's body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
