Ex-BNP leader arrested for extorting Tk3 crore from Jashore businessman

DB police have arrested former BNP leader Asaduzzaman Jony in Khulna for allegedly extorting Tk3 crore from a businessman in Nawapara of Jashore.

He was arrested at 9:30am on Thursday (14 August) from the Rose Garden Hotel in Khulna city, with help from the local police.

Abhoynagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Alim confirmed the arrest.

Jony was the organizational secretary of Nawapara Municipal BNP, but his position was suspended due to allegations of party indiscipline and extortion.

According to the case statement, in September 2024, a businessman named Tipu was threatened at gunpoint and extorted for a total of Tk4 crore in several installments. Later, under Tipu’s instruction, his manager handled the money transactions in stages. Among the accused, Jony and his father have been arrested, while three others remain at large. Police operations are ongoing.
