Ex-Chhatra Shibir president, Jamaat activist named in Kushtia Pir killing case
Police have filed a murder case over the killing of a religious leader in Kushtia, naming four individuals—including a former district president of Islami Chhatra Shibir—and listing up to 200 unidentified suspects.
The victim, Pir Shamim Reza Jahangir, 65, was killed in a mob attack at his shrine in Daulatpur’s Philipnagar area on April 11.
The named accused include Khaja Ahmed, a former Shibir district president and activist of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, along with local Jamaat activist Rajib Mistri, Khelafat Majlis upazila president Asaduzzaman Asad, 45, and a madrasa teacher identified as Safi.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Bheramara Circle) Delwar Hossain said no arrests have been made so far.
Daulatpur Jamaat Ameer Belal Uddin denied involvement of party members, saying the allegations would be challenged legally.
The case was filed late Monday (April 13) by the victim’s brother, Fazlur Rahman, a retired school-teacher.
Police said the attack was triggered by allegations of blasphemy. Hundreds of people reportedly stormed the shrine, killing Shamim, injuring three followers, vandalising the site, setting it on fire and looting valuables.
