Former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque suffered a heart attack in jail and was promptly admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The prison authorities confirmed the matter on Monday (August 25).

Earlier, on July 24, the former Chief Justice was arrested from his Dhaka residence in Dhanmondi by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He was later produced in court in connection with a murder case filed at Jatrabari Police Station. Following the hearing, the judge ordered his imprisonment, marking the first time in the country’s history that a former Chief Justice was arrested and sent to jail over a murder case.

Notably, ABM Khairul Haque served as the 19th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. Over the years, he faced allegations of political bias, controversial rulings, and manipulating the judiciary for political purposes through constitutional amendments, which often kept him in the public eye.
