Ex-Cox's Bazar-1 MP Jafar Alam detained
Former Cox's Bazar-1 MP Md. Jafar Alam has been detained by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB). He was detained from the capital's Dhanmondi area.
Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) of the DMP's Media and Public Relations Branch (DMP) Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed his arrest on Sunday afternoon.
He said that former Cox's Bazar-1 MP Md. Jafar Alam was arrested by the DB from the capital's Dhanmondi.
Jafar Alam was elected as a Member of Parliament for the first time with the Awami League’s nomination in 2018. He has faced numerous allegations, including irregularities, illegal accumulation of wealth, and oppression of local residents.
In the most recent national election, he was not nominated by the Awami League. He ran as an independent candidate but was defeated.
There are widespread allegations against him involving the grabbing of government forest land, land encroachment, and seizure of shrimp farms. Additionally, the incident of firing on people during a funeral prayer in absentia for Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayeedi on August 15, 2023, is still widely discussed by his opponents.
