Executions of 2 Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia is deeply disappointing: State Minister
Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir has described the execution of two Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia as a tragic incident, saying it was “deeply disappointing” for Bangladesh.
“The allegations brought against them, or the offences cited as grounds for carrying out the sentences, are also deeply disappointing for us,” he said.
“The sanctity of the House of Allah is sacred, and people travel to Mecca with pure intentions. If the reasons given for the executions are accurate, then the incident is naturally extremely disappointing and tragic, and cannot be accepted under any circumstances,” he added.
Kabir said Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia were both signatories to the Geneva Conventions and that the two countries were expected to maintain communication and exchange information in such cases. The government has sought an explanation from Saudi Arabia to determine why there was a lack of information in this instance.
He said Bangladesh maintained good and close relations with Saudi Arabia, describing the ties between the kingdom, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the current government as longstanding and historic.
Kabir expressed hope that relations between the two countries would reach new heights.
