Ex-Jhenaidah MP Nayeb Ali among five arrested in Shailkupa
Police have arrested former Jhenaidah-1 lawmaker and district Awami League vice-president Nayeb Ali Joarder and four others in Shailkupa on allegations of planning acts of sabotage and organising a flash procession by the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League ahead of August 15.
The five were arrested during a special police operation in Jhenaidah city and different parts of Shailkupa early Saturday (August 15).
Nayeb Ali is a former member of parliament from the Jhenaidah-1 constituency, which covers Shailkupa.
The other suspects were identified as Badsha Alamgir, 56, of Dudhshar village; Majibul Islam, 57, of Balapara; Al Nahian Sakib, 19, of Gosaidanga; and Md Hasibul Islam, 25, of Mahishakhola.
Police said the arrests were part of heightened security operations across the district aimed at preventing violence and maintaining public order around August 15.
Humayun Kabir Molla, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shailkupa police station, said, "The suspects were accused of maintaining regular contact with former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in India, planning to create unrest and carry out acts of sabotage, and organising a flash procession of the banned Chhatra League in Sarutia union."
A case has been filed against the five under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Shailkupa police station. Police said the case was registered as Case No. 5 on August 5, 2026.
The accused were produced before a court on Saturday afternoon and subsequently sent to the district jail, police said.
