Ex-Jubo League leader hacked to death in Bogura
A former Jubo League leader was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Bogura late Sunday night (August 23).
Saiful Islam, 50, was attacked around 10:30pm in the Ashokola Purba Para area of Bogura Sadar upazila while returning home on his motorcycle from Baghopara Bazar.
According to police and local residents, three young men stopped Saiful near his home. An argument broke out between them before the assailants attacked him repeatedly with machetes.
The attackers fled after leaving the injured Saiful in a nearby field. Locals attempted to take him to hospital, but he died on the way. His body was later taken to the mortuary of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.
Saiful, son of the late Abed Ali Mondal, was a former vice-president of Nunghola Union Jubo League and had served twice as a member of the union parishad.
He had recently been released from jail on bail after being arrested in a case related to the July uprising.
Bogura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ibrahim Ali said police visited the scene after receiving information about the killing and collected evidence. A pair of shoes and a smartphone were recovered from the area.
The motive behind the killing was not immediately clear, police said.
Several police teams are working to identify those involved, while an operation is underway to arrest the attackers.
