Former MP and central Krishak Dal Vice President Advocate Abul Bashar Akand was attacked and his vehicle vandalised by disgruntled BNP leaders and activists in Fulbaria.

The incident took place in two phases near Balia Mor of the municipality on Saturday afternoon (February 14).

Akand was reportedly confined in a room for nearly an hour before being rescued with police assistance. Two people, including his driver Arman, were injured in the attack.

According to locals, the violence erupted when party activists, agitated by Akand’s presence while inspecting a cotton warehouse damaged by fire on Balia Road, accused him of opposing BNP’s candidate Motahar Hossain Talukder in the recent elections, which they claim contributed to the party’s defeat.

Following the attack, Akand’s supporters blocked the Mymensingh–Sherpur road, during which his vehicle was again vandalised. Police intervened in the evening, restoring order and taking the damaged vehicle to the police station.

Fulbaria BNP has seen intensified internal conflicts since the elections. Supporters of the defeated candidate had been posting allegations of anti-party activities against Akand and several other leaders on social media.

Akand condemned the attack, saying he was assaulted while inspecting the fire-affected site and accused local BNP leader Mithun of leading the violence.

Md. Rashedul Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC-Investigation) of Fulbaria Police Staation, said preliminary findings indicate the attack was carried out by a faction of the BNP.

"Legal action will follow if a formal complaint is filed," he added.

Efforts to contact the accused were unsuccessful.
