Ex-MP Sujat Miah attacked in Habiganj, house torched at night
Former MP Sheikh Sujat Miah was attacked in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj on his way home after attending a May Day event. The attack occurred around 12.00pm on Thursday (May 1) in the Timirpur area along the Nabiganj-Habiganj road. Later that night, at around 10 pm, his residence was set ablaze. Firefighters quickly responded and brought the flames under control.
Sheikh Sujat Miah, a member of the BNP’s National Executive Committee and former MP of the Habiganj-1 constituency, attended a rally and discussion organized by the Nabiganj Upazila Jatiotabadi Sramik Dal on the occasion of International Workers' Day. According to police and eyewitnesses, he was attacked by several youths wielding local weapons as he was about to get into his car to return home. Local leaders and activists quickly intervened, prompting the attackers to flee. Sheikh Sujat Miah was not injured.
Md Kamal Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nabiganj Police Station, said, “With the help of locals, police arrested a suspect named Jamil Miah. A machete and a knife were recovered from his possession. Legal action will follow if a formal complaint is filed.”
Speaking about the nighttime fire, he added, “The cause of the blaze is under investigation. We're working to determine whether it was an act of sabotage or due to some other reason.”
The incident has sparked tension in the area, and the local administration is keeping a close watch on the situation.
