Expat's wife arrested for allegedly torturing domestic worker in Barishal
Allegations have been raised that a 14-year-old domestic worker was scalded with boiling water in the Charhogla village of Mehendiganj upazila, Barishal. The injured teenager is receiving treatment at Mehendiganj Upazila Health Complex. Following the incident, police have arrested Faiza Akter, wife of expatriate Zahir Talukdar.
She was sent to jail on Saturday, February 28. Earlier on Friday night, Mehendiganj Thana police conducted a raid and detained her.
The victim's family has filed a case at Mehendiganj police station over the torture of the domestic worker.
The victim, Lamia, and her family said she had been working at the house for about six years. During this long period, she was physically tortured on various pretexts. Lamia alleged that late on Thursday night, the homeowner poured boiling water on her over a trivial matter. She suffered burns on various parts of her body. She was also prevented from seeking medical treatment while injured.
On Friday morning, Lamia managed to escape and took shelter with her uncle Sirajul Islam in the same area. Later, she was admitted to Mehendiganj Upazila Health Complex.
Upon receiving the complaint, a police team led by SI Mosharref Hossain conducted a raid on Friday night at a house adjacent to Swarna Bakery in Charhogla area and arrested Faiza Akter.
Mehendiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said a case has been filed over the torture of the domestic worker. The accused has been arrested and sent to jail on Saturday.
