Expectant killed in dispute over garbage disposal in Cumilla

A woman, who is in the family way, was killed and three others seriously injured in Cumilla’s Burichong upazila following a family dispute over garbage disposal.

The incident took place around 2:00pm in Jagatpur Nagarbari village of Burichong municipality on Sunday afternoon (January 11).

The deceased, Fahima Akter, 25, wife of Zahirul Islam from Chutna village in Debidwar, had been visiting her father’s home.

Mohammad Lutfur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Burichong Police Station, said, "The confrontation began when Fahima argued with her cousin over a diaper thrown in the yard. At one point, Siam allegedly attacked her with several accomplices.

Responding to Fahima’s screams, her uncle Abu Taher, cousin Iqbal Hossain, and brother-in-law Shahjalal intervened but sustained injuries themselves.

She was promptly taken by locals to Burichong Upazila Health Complex, but the doctor on-duty declared her dead on arrival. The injured were referred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Her body has been sent to the hospital morgue for post-mortem, and process underway to file a case. No arrests have been made yet, police said.
